HOLLYWOOD DIRT OVERFLOW (09-07-10)

DID LINDSAY LOHAN RUN HER CAR INTO A STROLLER???

SOMETHING happened in West Hollywood last Wednesday involving LINDSAY LOHAN, her Maserati and a woman pushing a kid in a stroller. Exactly what happened, however, is up for debate. --A witness told RadarOnline.com that Lindsay was making a right turn at a red light while the woman and the stroller were in the crosswalk. Lindsay didn't look both ways, and her car hit the stroller hard enough to knock three wheels into the air. --After Lindsay completed her turn, she pulled over to the right side of the road and stopped for a second, but then she took off. --The woman continued crossing the street while the kid in the stroller cried. --This version of the events comes from a guy named Brayan Jaime . . . who just happens to be a paparazzi scumbag. His partner shot some video of what happened right AFTER Lindsay allegedly hit the stroller. (--You can see it here . . .)
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/09/exclusive-video-lindsay-lohan-involved-hit-and-run-clips-baby-stroller
--Jaime told TMZ he didn't report the incident to police because he, quote, "didn't want to get involved." (--But they did run and sell their footage to Radar Online.) --But there are dissenting accounts. --Two witnesses told "People" magazine that Lindsay's car never touched the stroller . . . it just sped past it. And the kid was already crying BEFORE her car went by. --Another witness told TMZ that Lindsay, quote, "ever-so-slightly tapped the stroller" . . . and that she was only going about ONE MILE AN HOUR. --This witness also says that when Lindsay pulled over, she asked the woman pushing the stroller if everything was okay. The woman said yes, so Lindsay left the scene.+ --Meanwhile, Lindsay was actually reached for comment, and all she would say was, quote, "I don't know what you're talking about."

DID JOHN MAYER LOSE A CELL PHONE FULL OF COMPROMISING IMAGES OF EX-GIRLFRIENDS???

The "National Enquirer" says that JOHN MAYER lost his cell phone . . . and it contained compromising stuff on it. --A so-called "friend" says, quote, "John told me his cell contains personal photos and videos of some of the famous women he's dated."

JESSE JAMES AND KAT VON D ARE OFFICIAL:

We've known it for weeks, but now it's official: JESSE JAMES and KAT VON D are a couple. Jesse attended the opening of Kat's new art gallery the other night. (--Here's some video of them on the red carpet . . .)
http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/marc_malkin/b198779_jesse_james_kat_von_dating_duh.html
--Kat told "People" magazine, quote, "Jesse is only my ninth boyfriend. I don't hang out with anybody unless I am in love." --Asked if she thinks Jesse is THE ONE, she said, quote, "I believe he is, so yeah." --She also said she didn't let the turmoil surrounding Jesse's personal life interfere with the relationship . . . quote, "I stayed away from that as much as possible, and when we connected recently, it was such a positive thing. --"It was just like, 'Wow, I can't believe I haven't spent this much time with you the entire time I've known you.' Now I'm just embracing it and enjoying it."

OKSANA GRIGORIEVA WANTS $40,000 A MONTH IN CHILD SUPPORT FROM MEL GIBSON:

MEL GIBSON currently pays OKSANA GRIGORIEVA $5,000 a month in child support for their daughter Lucia. But Oksana wants more. A LOT more. --She's asking a judge to bump it up to $40,000. --Here's something that'll probably work against her, though: She only gets $2,500 a month from TIMOTHY DALTON for their 13-year-old son Alexander. (--In other words: Cash grab.)

PAUL HOGAN CAN RETURN TO THE U.S.:

PAUL HOGAN will be allowed to return to his home in Los Angeles . . . even though he allegedly owes Australia $34 million in back taxes. --Hogan returned to Australia on August 20th for his mother's funeral, and officials refused to let him leave until he settled up. But Paul's attorney worked out a deal allowing him to leave. --For the record, though, Paul still claims he doesn't owe anything in back taxes . . . and he plans to fight the charges.

ZSA ZSA GABOR'S BODY WILL *NOT* BE PRESERVED IN PLASTIC:

ZSA ZSA GABOR'S husband says he is NOT making plans to preserve his wife's body in plastic . . . because she's STILL ALIVE and on the road to recovery. --Prince Frederic von Anhalt says, quote, "This is so sick! I did not leak this story out. Period! When I saw the story I nearly threw up." --He added, quote, "My wife is alive! What are they talking about? We are not that sick up here. We don't talk like that."

(--Here's some video of von Anhalt raging against the media . . .)
(--WARNING!!! There's some BLEEPED profanity in here, as well as the word "bastard" UNBLEEPED . . .)

CHRIS KLEIN HAS SETTLED UP FOR HIS DUI:

CHRIS KLEIN put his June DUI to rest on Friday, when he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. Klein was sentenced to four days in jail . . . then given credit for four days he'd already served. --Before his sentencing, he told the judge, quote, "I apologize for my wrongdoing and I really appreciate the court giving me the opportunity to prove how seriously I took all of this."

JOHN TRAVOLTA HAS DROPPED THE EXTORTION CASE AGAINST THOSE TWO PEOPLE IN THE BAHAMAS:

The charges against those two people who tried to extort JOHN TRAVOLTA in the Bahamas have been dropped . . . at Travolta's request. --As you probably recall, Tarino Lightbourne and Pleasant Bridgewater were accused of trying to squeeze $25 MILLION from John and his wife, KELLY PRESTON. --It was all over what turned out to be a pretty insignificant document that Travolta signed for a paramedic when his son Jett died during a Bahamian vacation in January of 2009. --The case already went to court once, with Travolta traveling back to the Bahamas to testify in person. But it ended in a mistrial last October. And John and Kelly apparently don't want to suffer through all of that again. --John issued a statement saying, quote, "The long pending status of this matter continued to take a heavy emotional toll on my family causing us to conclude that it was finally time to put this matter behind us. --"Therefore, after much reflection I concluded that it was in my family's best interest for me not to voluntarily return to the Bahamas to testify a second time at trial. --"We are thankful to the people of the Bahamas for the friendship, love and support they provided to us during this matter."

TAYLOR LAUTNER GOT $40,000 FROM THAT RV COMPANY . . . AND HE'S DONATING IT TO CHARITY:

TAYLOR LAUTNER received a $40,000 settlement from McMahon RV . . . the company he sued for failing to deliver a trailer he'd wanted to use on a movie set. --According to Taylor's attorney, that money is going to a children's charity called the Lollipop Theater Network. --As you may recall, the boss of the company challenged Taylor to a PUSH-UP CONTEST for the money. That never happened, obviously. --By the way . . . a so-called "source" would like to clarify something about Taylor's original lawsuit. --One of the things Taylor sued McMahon RV for was EMOTIONAL DISTRESS. And a lot of people on the Internet made fun of him for it. But it's not what you think. --The source says, quote, "There was never any diva behavior. 'Emotional distress' is an automatic checked box on a fraudulent claim."

THE ORIGINAL CELLIST FOR ELO WAS KILLED BY A GIANT BALE OF HAY:

MIKE EDWARDS, the original cello player for the ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA . . . or ELO if you prefer . . . was killed Friday afternoon when a giant bale of hay weighing more than half-a-ton rolled down a slope and crashed onto the roof of his van. --It's not clear why the cylindrical hay bale . . . which weighed about 1,300 pounds . . . rolled down the steep hill. Police have questioned a farmer who was working on the field above the roadway. --Edwards died instantly, but his van swerved and hit another car after the bale fell on it. No one else was injured. --Police identified Edwards using photographs and YouTube footage. Over the weekend, they were trying to locate family, but he apparently didn't have many relatives. He was never married. --Edwards . . . who was 62 . . . was with ELO when they were formed in 1972, but he quit the band in 1975 to become a Buddhist. He changed his name to Deva Pramada and made a living teaching the cello.

COMEDIAN ROBERT SCHIMMEL DIED OF INJURIES HE SUFFERED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN WHICH HIS DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING:

Comedian ROBERT SCHIMMEL died on Friday from injuries he suffered in a car accident in Arizona eight days earlier. He was 60 years old --Schimmel and his 11-year-old son were in a car being driven by his 19-year-old daughter, when she had to swerve suddenly to avoid an accident on the road ahead. --Their car left the road and flipped several times. Schimmel's children survived, although his daughter remains in the hospital in stable condition. --Schimmel . . . who was a frequent guest on "The Howard Stern Show" . . . had a heart attack in 1998 . . . and was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2000. --In 2008, he released a book called "Cancer on Five Dollars a Day (chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life". --This past January, Schimmel was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, which he'd contracted from a blood transfusion. He was awaiting a liver transplant at the time of his death. --He had five kids, but one of them died of cancer at the age of 11.

IT'S ON!!! BETWEEN "TWILIGHT" AND "HARRY POTTER"!!!

There's always been kind of a natural rivalry between the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises. But nobody on either side has ever really stoked it. Until now. --In the upcoming, final chapter of the "Harry Potter" saga . . . (--which is being split into TWO movies) . . . Ron and Hermione FINALLY become a couple. And they share their first kiss. --And EMMA WATSON . . . who plays Hermione . . . thinks it's kind of a big deal, because the romance angle isn't really played up like it is in that OTHER franchise. --She says, quote, "This kiss between Hermione and Ron is highly anticipated, it's been building up for eight films now. --"And 'Harry Potter' is not 'Twilight', you know; we're not selling sex. So, whenever there is any hint of that, everybody gets terribly excited."

GEORGE CLOONEY'S "THE AMERICAN" OPPRESSED "MACHETE" AT THE HOLIDAY BOX OFFICE:

GEORGE CLOONEY'S "The American" has been out since last Wednesday and it hasn't even made $20 million yet, but it still somehow managed to ROB "Machete" of the top spot at the box office. --Clooney's assassin flick made $16.4 million over the holiday weekend, while unappreciative American audiences largely ignored the Mexican masterpiece that is "Machete", which earned $14 million. (--That works out to 181 million in pesos.) (--I can't describe how deeply disappointed I am in all of you. I snuck out on my wife and kids long enough to do *my* part to make "Machete" a hit, but the rest of you let me down. I really don't think we can be friends anymore.)

CHECK OUT THE LEGO TRAILER FOR "MACHETE":

"Machete" is indeed one of the coolest movies of the year. And just when you thought it couldn't get any cooler, we bring you this: The LEGO trailer!!! --It's actually based on the original FAKE "Machete" trailer that was made for the "Grindhouse" movie. --But as you may have noticed if you saw the movie, a lot of scenes from the fake trailer were lifted as-is and edited into the full-length "Machete" flick that hit theaters this weekend. (--This trailer was actually posted on YouTube a while ago, but it's new to us . . . and it's freakin' HILARIOUS. So check it out . . .) (--WARNING!!! This clip contains unbleeped profanity AND NAKED LEGO WOMEN!!! . . .)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtkHygcTC8A\

CASEY AFFLECK CLAIMS HIS JOAQUIN PHOENIX DOCUMENTARY IS *NOT* A HOAX:

Most people believe that "I'm Still Here" . . . the movie about JOAQUIN PHOENIX'S attempt to become a rapper . . . is more MOCKUMENTARY than documentary. But director CASEY AFFLECK begs to differ. -He says, quote, "I can tell you that there is no hoax. That never even entered into my consciousness until other people began to talk about the movie." (--For the record, I don't believe him. But either way, I definitely want to see this movie.)

CHECK OUT A TRAILER FOR RYAN REYNOLDS' NEW MOVIE, "BURIED":

RYAN REYNOLDS' new thriller, "Buried", hits theaters on September 29th. Ryan plays a contractor working in Iraq, who finds himself buried alive after his convoy is attacked. --He has a cell phone and a lighter . . . and a limited time before his battery and his air run out. (--It looks pretty good. Check out the trailer here . . .) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H_wfBwPbFI
"AMERICAN IDOL" INSANITY

KARA DIOGUARDI WILL *NOT* RETURN TO "AMERICAN IDOL":

It's official: KARA DIOGUARDI will not be returning to "American Idol". --In a statement, Kara said, quote, "I felt like I won the lottery when I joined 'American Idol' two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave 'Idol'. I am very proud to have been associated with [it] . . . it has truly been an amazing experience. --"I am grateful to FOX, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, as well as the cast, crew and contestants, for all they have given to me. I look forward to my next challenge, and want to thank everyone who has supported me. --"All the best to everyone on Season 10!" Several producers also commented on Kara's departure . . . basically saying the usual stuff: That she was a joy to have on the show, that she will be missed, and that they wish her the best in the future. --Kara didn't elaborate further, but she's clearly insinuating that she quit. However, that may not have been the case. TMZ is sticking with the claim they made back in July . . . that she was fired from the show. (--You have to admit . . . the timing is pretty suspect. If Kara truly felt like she should move on, why didn't she announce it WAY EARLIER . . . perhaps when ELLEN DEGENERES said that she was walking away?) (--And a few weeks ago, Kara's dad said she wanted to return to "Idol" but was frustrated that the producers weren't in contact with her about her status.) (--The most likely situation . . . as I see it . . . is that the producers were keeping Kara on the back burner, but were really looking to move on.) (--There were probably two factors: One was that returning executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE wants to go back to the three-judge format . . . and secondly, it seems like they weren't happy with the chemistry with her on the panel.) (--So maybe Kara saw the writing on the wall . . . and decided to "quit" before "Idol" officially announced that they wouldn't be renewing her contract.) --As for the rest of the judges, "Idol" is expected to FINALLY make the new panel official sometime this week. For now, it still sounds like there will be two additions: AEROSMITH singer STEVEN TYLER and JENNIFER LOPEZ. --Although technically, it's still anyone's guess at this point. There's still talk that nothing has been finalized yet, and that other supposed candidates . . . like Elton John, Shania Twain and Harry Connick Jr. . . . are still in the running. --By the way, RANDY JACKSON still seems like a SURE THING. A so-called "source" tells E! Online, quote, "Randy's locked in and pumped about it. They'll officially announce [him] with the other judges."

STEVEN SEAGAL'S A&E SHOW *WILL* HAVE A SECOND SEASON:

STEVEN SEAGAL . . . who's pretty awesome as the Mexican drug lord Torrez in "Machete" . . . will be back on A&E this fall. --His reality show, "Steven Seagal: Lawman" . . . in which he works as a real-life cop in New Orleans . . . has been cleared for a second season. It'll begin on October 6th. --The show was temporarily put on hold earlier this year . . . after a woman sued Steven for sexual harassment. The woman has since dropped the suit. --The second season, at least initially, will consist of footage shot BEFORE that scandal broke. There are eight episodes in the can that haven't aired yet. --Seagal's boss in New Orleans suspended him in the wake of the accusations . . . saying that it would be a "distraction." It's unclear if he has been reinstated yet, but obviously that would need to happen for further episodes to be filmed.

JERRY LEWIS' LABOR DAY TELETHON RAISED $58.9 MILLION:

JERRY LEWIS' 45th annual Labor Day telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association raised $58.9 million over the weekend. That's down slightly from last year's $60.5 million. Two years ago, a record $65 million was donated. --An estimated 40 million viewers tuned in for some of the telethon, which was broadcast on 170 TV stations.

THE "CAMP ROCK 2" PREMIERE WAS BIG, BUT NOT AS BIG AS THE FIRST "CAMP ROCK":

"Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" premiered on the Disney Channel Friday night . . . and according to the early numbers, about 8 million people tuned in. --That's a big number . . . in fact, according to "TV Guide", it's the highest rating for a movie on cable this year. --But it wasn't as big as the first "Camp Rock" movie, which debuted to 8.9 million viewers on a Friday in June of 2008. That same weekend, 3.5 million and 3.7 million viewers watched encores on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. --The Disney Channel aired several encores of "Camp Rock 2" over the weekend . . . but the numbers for them haven't been released yet.

"JERSEY SHORE" GOT RECORD RATINGS *AGAIN* LAST THURSDAY:

I'm gonna go ahead and say the decline of Western civilization is directly proportional to the ratings of "Jersey Shore". Because those ratings just keep going up. Last Thursday night, the show reached another new all-time high with 6.5 million viewers --The show's previous high, 5.8 million viewers, was set the week before. (--This season, "Jersey Shore" is averaging 5.6 million viewers per episode. By comparison, the show averaged 2.7 million viewers last season.)

HAS LADY GAGA BEEN HOSPITALIZED MULTIPLE TIMES FOR STARVING HERSELF?

LADY GAGA'S former tour manager . . . a guy named David Ciemny . . . makes some interesting claims about Lady Gaga in a new book. --The book, titled "Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga" . . . which was written by someone named Maureen Callahan . . . will be out next Tuesday. --The former tour manager says Lady Gaga was hospitalized SIX times last year . . . because she wasn't taking care of herself. He claims she would BINGE on junk food, and then starve herself for weeks at a time to stay skinny. --He adds, quote, "When I say she was sick, I mean physically and mentally." --And his wife Angela claims Lady Gaga would cuddle with her . . . in bed. --Angela adds, quote, "I would say, 'Gaga, I have a husband to go home to. I'll be in the room next door.' She'd call and text me, 'I miss you, Ange, can you come back?' So I would. --"We literally would do our make-up together every morning and get ready for bed together at night." --Lady Gaga has not commented on any of this.

VINCE NEIL WAS *REALLY* DRUNK WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED FOR DUI EARLIER THIS SUMMER:

TMZ is now saying that MOTLEY CRUE singer VINCE NEIL had a blood-alcohol level of "nearly three times the legal limit" when he was arrested for DUI back in June. --According to the police report, Vince was pulled over doing 60 in a 45 mile-per-hour zone. In addition to speeding, he was also, quote, "weaving between the lanes." --Vince failed three sobriety tests, before eventually giving up. He reportedly told the cops, quote, "I can't do this." He took two breathalyzer tests, which registered his blood alcohol level at .215 and .216. (--The legal limit is .08.) --Vince was charged with DUI and speeding. He'll be arraigned on September 27th.

DUFF MCKAGAN HAS LEFT JANE'S ADDICTION:

Bassist DUFF MCKAGAN has spent most of this year playing with JANE'S ADDICTION . . . but that's over now. The band says Duff decided to leave because he and the band were, quote, "headed in different directions [musically]." --Duff played some shows with Jane's Addiction, and was in the process of helping them write songs for a new album. (--Duff . . . who was also in GUNS N' ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER . . . was replacing former Jane's bassist ERIC AVERY, who'd quit the band back in March.)

STEVEN TYLER AND JOE PERRY DISAGREE ABOUT THE HIP-CHECK:

AEROSMITH singer STEVEN TYLER and guitarist JOE PERRY almost ALWAYS seem be at odds, so this isn't surprising: Apparently, they're NOT on the same page regarding Joe's infamous hip-check that knocked Steven off a stage last month. --In an interview with Canada's "The Globe and Mail", Steven said, quote, "I had bumped into Joe. I kind of [bump] him . . . that's what we do night after night. -"We've done it for 40 years. In return, he gave me a hit that I feel was a bit out of place. […] I was able to jump off [stage] and grab peoples' shoulders, and it was fine. I got right back up. I don't know what he was thinking. He's Joe Perry." --Meanwhile, Joe said, quote, "He backed into me hard. And I was also standing on the edge. All I did was brush against him. Basically he had a choice . . . --"He could have kept his balance and not gone into the audience, or he could have dropped in, which he did. None of it was planned . . . it's a contact sport. The week before, he hit me over the head with a mic stand."
(--You can see an up-close angle on the hip-checks below. Skip ahead to the 45-second mark . . .)

SCOTT WEILAND WILL RELEASE A CHRISTMAS ALBUM:

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer SCOTT WEILAND released a cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" last year . . . and this year, he's putting out a full holiday album. --Scott says, quote, "It'll be very traditional. You know, strings, upright bass, jazz horns, piano, and guitar. I'm sort of picking various versions of these songs, because they've been covered so many times, but my favorite versions . . . with a little twist." --One of those "twists" will be a REGGAE version of "The Little Drummer Boy". That's all we know for now though. There isn't a complete track list yet . . . or an album title or release date. (--Although we assume it'll be out THIS year.)

KANYE WEST HAS APOLOGIZED TO TAYLOR SWIFT . . . AGAIN . . . AND HE'S ALSO WRITTEN A SONG FOR HER:

KANYE WEST and TAYLOR SWIFT will both be at the "MTV Video Music Awards" this Sunday . . . but in the meantime, Kanye is still trying to make amends for his now-infamous stage-storming incident at last year's "VMAs". --In a series of Twitter posts Saturday, Kanye talked candidly about the incident, apologized to Taylor . . . again . . . and announced that he has a gift for her. --He said, quote, "I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that's so beautiful and I want her to have it. If she won't take it then I'll perform it for her. She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows. She had no idea what hit her." --Kanye called Taylor, quote, "justa lil girl with dreams like the rest of us" . . . and added, quote, "She deserves the apology more than anyone. I'm ready to get out of my own way. The ego is overdone. Who am I to run on stage? --"I would never ever again in a million years do that. Sorry to let you down. I want to win [the haters'] hearts back so I can continue to bring my take on culture to the masses with a clean opinion. It starts with this . . . I'm sorry Taylor." --He also said, quote, "I am not a bad person . . . --"Even in that moment I was only trying to do good but people don't always need my help. BeyoncÉ didn't need that. MTV didn't need that, and Taylor and her family friends and fans definitely didn't want or need that." --Kanye went on, quote, "There are people who don't dislike me . . . they absolutely hate me! If you google '(A-hole)' my face may very well pop up 2 pages into the search. People tweeted that they wish I was dead. They wanted me to die people. --"I carry that . . . I wear my scars." --In all, Kanye's Twitter session included about 100 Tweets and lasted almost three hours. (--To read all the posts, hit up Kanye's feed . . . HERE . . . and go down to Saturday morning. This part starts with the "Man I love Twitter" Tweet.)

NAZZY’S RANDOM STUFF

"PHARMAGEDDON" HAS ARRIVED . . . PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE IN THE U.S. HAS REACHED SHOCKING EPIDEMIC LEVELS:

Drug abuse in this country has hit EPIDEMIC levels. And it's not marijuana or crack or even meth . . . no, the people in this country are becoming brain-dead ZOMBIES off of drugs that are LEGAL. But clearly, that doesn't make them less dangerous. --Prescription drug abuse, especially painkillers and antidepressants, is hitting an all-time high. It's such a massive problem that experts are calling it "Pharmageddon." Check out these stats . . . --Over the last two decades, the number of people who've died from prescription drug overdoses has gone up 500%. --For the first time ever, in 15 states and Washington, D.C., prescription drug overdoses have passed car accidents as the leading cause of accidental death. --About 70% of the people over-medicating themselves and abusing prescription drugs are baby boomers. --By 12th grade, 10% of teenagers say they've tried Vicodin and 5% have used OxyContin. --At least 2.5% of the adults in the U.S. abuse prescription drugs every month. --How did we get here? Dr. Barbra Krantz works as the medical director at the Hanley Center, which is a drug treatment center in Florida. --She says, quote, "In the late 1990s, there was a paradigm shift for treating chronic pain. And at the same time there was direct consumer advertising. People were going to physicians saying 'I have this pain' and doctors are over-prescribing." --If you think someone in your life might be addicted to painkillers, antidepressants or other prescription drugs, here are some of the warning signs you should keep an eye out for . . . so you can get them help before something tragic happens.
#1.) Activities abandoned. People start withdrawing and isolating themselves, only trying to take the drug or get more of the drug.
#2.) Dependence on the drug. If they don't have their drug, do they start panicking, lashing out, or even showing physical signs of withdrawal?
#3.) Asking friends for the drug. As abuse gets worse, they start using up their prescriptions too quickly. So they start going to friends, new doctors, or anyone who can get them more. (CBS News)

AT LEAST ONE OUT OF SEVEN PEOPLE'S KITCHENS WOULD FLUNK A HEALTH INSPECTION:

How would you feel about eating dinner at a restaurant where they stored their meat at unsafe temperatures, didn't properly rinse off their fruit, and didn't always sanitize a surface after cutting raw chicken on top of it? --According to a new study by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, you may be eating dinner there on a nightly basis. --They found that at LEAST one out of every seven people's home kitchens would FLUNK a health inspection. --To compare that to commercial kitchens, about 98% of restaurants pass health inspections. --The big mistakes people make at home are keeping their refrigerators at temperatures higher than 41 degrees . . . storing raw meat on shelves above other foods . . . and not fully rinsing off fruits and vegetables. --To get the data, 13,000 people took a survey and answered questions about their kitchens. 14%, or one out of seven, gave answers that show their kitchen would fail a health inspection. WHO CARES ABOUT BEING A MILLIONAIRE? AS LONG AS YOU'RE MAKING $75,000, YOU'LL BE JUST AS HAPPY:

We've got a new study to tell you about today that proves two things. One: Money CAN buy you happiness. And two: Luckily, it actually takes WAY less money than you'd think. --A study from Princeton University found that making more money does make you happier . . . but only when you're making under $75,000-a-year. --Once you hit that income level, making more money doesn't have any impact on your happiness . . . regardless of whether you're making $76,000 or $50 BILLION. --In the study, $75,000-a-year seemed to be the point where money stopped being a major source of stress for people. --At that level, you feel like you can basically take care of all your reasonable financial obligations. --But . . . while more money doesn't change your happiness, it does change how you view your life on the whole. The more money people made, the more likely they were to say their life was going well. (Time)

25% OF WORKING AMERICANS WERE JOBLESS AT SOME POINT DURING THE RECESSION . . . AND THEIR NEW JOBS ARE MUCH CRAPPIER:

Right now there are about 139 million Americans who are in the workforce. And of that group, ONE out of FOUR were unemployed at some point during the recession, then got hired at a new job. Those people are called "re-employed" workers. --And while it's nice to have a job and everything . . . according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center, very, very few of the re-employed workers out there feel like their new jobs are better than the ones they lost. --About THREE out of FIVE re-employed workers say their old jobs were much better than their new ones. --Just TWO out of TEN make more money at their new job than they did at their old job. --Only ONE out of FOUR get better benefits at their new jobs than at their old job. --All that being said . . . about 80% are happy that they at least HAVE a new job.
-So far during the recession, about one out of three people who were laid off from one job ALSO have gotten a new job and been laid off from that one too. --One out of six re-employed people have lost THREE or more jobs during the recession. (Washington Post)

JETBLUE OFFICIALLY PARTS WAYS WITH THAT FLIGHT ATTENDANT WHO FREAKED OUT AND SLID OFF THE PLANE ON THE EMERGENCY SLIDE:

Last month, 38-year-old Steven Slater of New York City became a folk hero. He's that JetBlue flight attendant who got into a fight with a rude passenger, then cursed her out, pulled the emergency slide and slid off the plane. --At the time, he assumed JetBlue was going to fire him. But they just suspended him while they investigated the incident. --Last week, apparently they wrapped up that investigation . . . and over the weekend, a spokeswoman from JetBlue said they've let Steven go. She didn't give any other details. --Steven's lawyer has a different version of the story. He says that Steven decided to quit on Wednesday and he wasn't fired. (--Regardless, he's out of his job now, free to go on any reality show out there. That's gotta be next, right?) --Steven still has criminal charges pending against him from the incident, including reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. (ABC News)

A NEW POLL RATES AMERICAN WOMEN AS THE SECOND-UGLIEST IN THE WORLD?

How DARE the people of the world say this? To channel my inner JESSE JACKSON, it's slanderous, it's malicious, it's preposterous, and it's just not true. --A new worldwide poll rated American women as the second UGLIEST in the world. Which is just offensive.
-Especially since our lovely ladies finished JUST behind British women . . . and it's a scientific fact that they really ARE unattractive. --22.4% of people rated British women as the least attractive in the world. Americans came in second at 16.7%. Germans were third, followed by "Eastern Europeans" and Spanish women. --Turkish women were voted the most attractive. --Gary Hewitt is a travel expert from England. He says he's not surprised that British women came in dead last. Quote, "They are increasingly seen to behave more like British men and end up drinking as much and letting it all hang out. It's not a good reputation." (Daily Mail)

A GAME OF STRIP MONOPOLY ENDS IN JAIL WHEN A FIGHT BREAKS OUT BETWEEN TWO JEALOUS, NAKED WOMEN:

This has got to be one of the most exciting games of Monopoly in HISTORY. --22-year-old Gary Williamson of Blackpool, England, was playing STRIP MONOPOLY with two women: His 20-year-old girlfriend Leah McDonnell and her friend, 20-year-old Micha Robinson. -How do you play strip Monopoly? When you land on someone's property, instead of giving them cash, you take off an article of clothing. --Well . . . Gary, Leah and Micha were drinking and, during the course of the game, they all ended up fully naked. And that's when Leah noticed that Gary, her boyfriend, would NOT stop staring at Micha's exposed breasts. --She made a comment, her and Micha started NUDE FIGHTING . . . and Gary got in the middle to break it up. --The police got there and thought Gary was assaulting the two naked women, so he was arrested. He was in court last week and after hearing his case, the charges were dropped. --There's no word on whether Gary and Leah are still together, or if Leah and Micha have made up and become friends again. --For some reason, though, the media reported on which Monopoly pieces each of the three were using during the game. If you care, Gary was the boot, Leah was the battleship and Micha was the racecar. (???) (London Sun)

WANT TO HAVE A BABY GIRL? EAT A LOT OF YOGURT AND STOP EATING BACON:

We're always a little skeptical about different tricks you can use to pick your baby's gender . . . if there was really a technique that worked, I feel like we'd all know it by now. But this one has a little science behind it, so we're gonna pass it along. --A team of scientists at Maastricht University in the Netherlands say they've figured out a two-step process to help you influence your future baby's gender. Those steps are:

#1.) If you want a girl, try to conceive anytime except on the days right before or after the woman's ovulation. If you want a boy, try to conceive during those pre- and post-ovulation days.

#2.) If you want a girl, eat foods that are high in calcium and magnesium, like yogurt, cheese, spinach, tofu, almonds, oatmeal, broccoli, oranges, cashews and whole wheat cereals. And cut out foods that are high in sodium or potassium. --If you want a boy, eat foods that are high in sodium and potassium like olives, bacon, salami, smoked salmon, potatoes and meat. And cut out foods that are high in calcium and magnesium. --In the study, 172 women stuck as closely as possible to the steps for conceiving a girl. And 80% of them, or four out of five, actually did conceive a girl. (News.com.au)

A 106-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ATTRIBUTES HER LONG LIFE TO . . . STAYING A VIRGIN:

Would a life without sex be a life worth living? I say: Absolutely not. If I'm not humping, I'm not living. There's a woman in Scotland who REALLY doesn't see eye-to-eye with me. --Isa Blyth of Edinburgh, Scotland, turned 106 YEARS OLD over the weekend. And she attributes her long life to . . . staying a VIRGIN. --Isa says she's never been with a man. She's never even been kissed. And she thinks that devoting all of her energy elsewhere has kept her going far longer than most people. --She was born in 1904 and was the oldest of seven siblings. She helped take care of them . . . then got a job working as a secretary for a whisky distillery. --Isa also had several hobbies . . . she was active in her church choir, she golfed and she gardened. -According to her niece, 67-year-old Sheena Campbell, quote, "She was always busy. She says she never felt the need for romance and never had time for a man . . . she [also] never had time to be sad. She's an amazing character." --Isa lives in a nursing home now and, considering she's 106, is still in pretty good health. (Scottish Sun)

POLICE ARREST TWO MEN FOR HAVING A BAG FILLED WITH WHITE POWDER . . . WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE GRANDMA'S ASHES:

Last week, highway patrol officers in southwestern Wyoming pulled over a car with two guys inside. The officers suspected they had drugs . . . so they searched the car. --They found trace amounts of marijuana, some drug paraphernalia, and several prescription drugs like OxyContin. But the big score was in the center console . . . where they found one of those purple Crown Royal bags filled with white powder. --The two men in the car were 30-year-old Thomas Garay and 30-year-old Zachary Beason, both from Worland, Wyoming. They were both arrested. --Then the police lab started trying to figure out what the white powder was. At first they thought it was low-quality cocaine or meth, but upon further review, it turned out to be . . . CREAMATED ASHES. --Turns out the woman who owns the car . . . whose name wasn't released . . . keeps her grandma's ashes in her center console. The police say the woman, quote, "was very close [to her grandma] and always keeps her nearby." --Thomas and Zachary were both charged with a misdemeanor for having the prescription drugs. As for grandma's ashes, those were returned to the car owner. (Denver Post)

A 27-INCH GUY IN COLOMBIA IS NOW OFFICIALLY THE SHORTEST MAN IN THE WORLD:

There's a new record holder for the shortest man in the world . . . and, believe it or not, it's not one of the cast members on "Entourage". --24-year-old Edward "Nino" Hernandez of Bogota, Colombia, was just certified by "Guinness" as the shortest man in the world. He's 27 inches tall, or two-foot-three. --Nino weighs 22 pounds and, according to his mother, quote, "He hasn't grown since he was two years old . . . [and doctors] never gave us a diagnosis" to explain why he's so small. --The previous record holder for "world's shortest man" was He Pingping of China. He was 1.5 inches taller than Nino, and died back in March. --BUT . . . it looks like Nino's a lame duck champion. There's a guy in Nepal named Khagendra Thapa Magar who is five inches shorter than Nino. Once he turns 18 next month, he should replace Nino as the record holder. --Until then, though, Nino's living it up. He says he already has a girlfriend . . . an 18-year-old named Fanny who's just under five feet tall . . . and he's started getting some movie offers thanks to the "Guinness" notoriety. --His only complaint is, quote, "It bothers me that people are [always] touching me and picking me up." FIVE EVERYDAY ETIQUETTE MISTAKES:

You can't pick your nose or burp in public and get away with it, but for some reason people make OTHER etiquette mistakes every day and no one calls them out. Here are five etiquette mistakes you should never make again . . .

#1.) NOT STEPPING AWAY TO MAKE A PHONE CALL. The worst is when people do it at DINNER. But if you need to make a call during ANY social situation, you should go outside, or go to a different room. --If you're standing in line at the grocery store, or sitting on a bus and you CAN'T step away, just be as quiet as possible.

#2.) ARGUING OVER HOW TO SPLIT UP THE CHECK. If you're with a big group and you're all on one bill, it's inevitable that someone won't chip in enough, and others will have to pay extra. --So just be prepared to throw down a few extra dollars to make sure the waitress gets a decent tip. --And if someone CONSISTENTLY underpays, bring it up later . . . not in the middle of the restaurant.

#3.) NOT GIVING UP YOUR SEAT. If YOU'RE sitting and a PREGNANT woman is STANDING, the laws of basic human decency say you should give up your seat . . . even if you had a tough day.

#4.) ACCIDENTALLY DOMINATING CONVERSATIONS. When someone tells a story, ask follow-up questions. Most people tend to respond with some version of, "Okay, now here's how your story applies to ME."

#5.) GROOMING YOURSELF IN PUBLIC. If something's stuck in your teeth, deal with it behind closed doors. --And even if you're just sitting in your living room with a friend, anything you'd normally do in a BATHROOM . . . like clipping your fingernails or cleaning your ears . . . SHOULD be done in a bathroom. (AskMen.com)

LIFESTYLES:
The Price Of Happiness

Money can help buy happiness – but only if you bring in about $75,000 a year, new research shows. While happiness increases along with annual household incomes up to about $75,000, beyond that, earning more money has no effect on day-to-day contentment, according to the National Academy of Sciences. While making more won’t help your emotional state on any given day, people who had household incomes above $75,000 were more apt to say they were satisfied overall with their life. Comparing their life-satisfaction results with those of other countries, the researchers said the United States ranked ninth after the Scandinavian countries, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand.

459 Million Vacation Days Skipped

Despite the health and relationship benefits linked to a vacation, 459 million U.S. vacation days went unused last year. “Vacations are not a luxury, they’re a necessity,” says John de Graaf, executive director of Take Back Your Time, a non-profit organization that studies issues related to work. “Men who take them are 32% less likely to suffer from heart disease than those who don’t,” he said. “For women, it’s 50%. And women who don’t take vacations are more than twice as likely to suffer from depression.” Another study by LastMinuteTravel.com indicates 45% of 153 million working Americans did not use vacation days in 2009, with 78% anticipating they will leave as many as 10 vacation days unused in 2010. Why?

· 51% say coordinating with family and friends is too difficult

· 40% say they don’t have enough money for a “real vacation.”

· 47% say their work-life is too busy to enjoy time away.

According to the Organization for Economic and Co-operation and Development, all developed countries have laws requiring paid vacation days except the United States. Japan and Canada require 10 days of paid vacation, while Finland and France have laws requiring 30 days of paid vacation per year.
