HOW TO BREAK IT OFF
#1.) DON'T DELAY IT. If you're sure you're over someone, don't agree to any more dates. Period. Delaying the inevitable isn't fair to you OR them.
#2.) DON'T DRAG IT OUT. Don't keep the lines of communication open with someone you don't want to date. If you're really not interested in pursuing a relationship, stop all emails and calls as soon as possible. If they keep trying to contact you, don't respond.
#3.) BE REASONABLE. If you've gotten pretty serious with someone, it's a good rule to end things in person. But if you've only been on a few dates, it's more acceptable to end things over the phone or email.
#4.) BE HONEST. Avoid saying things you don't mean if you don't really feel that way. Like "we can still be friends." Just keep it honest and simple.
#5.) TAKE CUES. Don't assume someone wants to be treated the way you would. Everyone is different. Instead, take cues from what you observe and adjust to the situation. And no matter what, resist the urge to console them or apologize.
#6.) BE REALISTIC. No one likes being rejected, so don't expect a positive reaction. If someone reacts inappropriately, don't engage them and don't respond to additional attempts to communicate with you. (Happen Magazine)
